European transactional email providers compared

If your application's email has to stay in Europe, the usual US providers (SendGrid, Mailgun, Postmark, Resend) are not the only choice. Several European services send transactional email from the EU, and they differ in who owns the infrastructure, what they cost and what they are built for.

This page compares five of them, Mailhuset included. We run Mailhuset, so read our row with that in mind; every figure below was taken from each provider's own website on 1 November 2026, and prices change, so check before you decide.

Who owns the infrastructure

"Sent from the EU" can mean two different things, and for some buyers the difference matters.

  • EU-owned infrastructure. Lettermint runs its own servers in the EU, and Scaleway is a French cloud provider sending from its own data centres. If your requirement is that no US company operates any part of the sending path, these are the ones to look at first.
  • An EU region of a US cloud. Mailhuset sends through Amazon SES in Stockholm, so email is sent and stored in the EU, but the underlying cloud is operated by a US company. For most GDPR and data residency requirements an EU region is what counts; for strict sovereignty requirements it may not be enough.

Ask any provider for its sub-processor list before signing. Mailhuset's is at /subprocessors.

Which one fits

  • Lettermint if you want a Dutch, developer-focused API on EU-owned infrastructure.
  • Sweego if you are in France and want a simple, low-cost plan with a generous monthly volume.
  • Scaleway Transactional Email if you already run on Scaleway or want the lowest pay-as-you-go cost at small volumes, and are comfortable with a more bare-bones product.
  • Brevo if you also need marketing campaigns, SMS, WhatsApp and a CRM in one suite, and transactional email is one part of that.
  • Mailhuset if you want transactional email, inbound email parsed to JSON and broadcasts in one developer API, with signed webhooks, official SDKs for Node, Python, PHP and Go, and support in English and Norwegian.

What to check whatever you choose

  1. Domain authentication. SPF, DKIM and DMARC on your own sending domain. See SPF, DKIM and DMARC explained.
  2. Bounce and complaint handling. Hard bounces and spam complaints should be suppressed automatically. See How to handle email bounces.
  3. Webhooks. Delivery events pushed to you, ideally signed. See Email webhooks explained.
  4. Data processing agreement. A DPA and a published sub-processor list. See European transactional email.
